ON THE JOB ACTIONS
Focus
Read the notes or watch the videos on How do Values Work and Making Values Work. These will help you to get ideas about the values i.e., motivators for each member of your team. Discuss their motivators with them so that you can consciously structure tasks, gain agreement, and encourage achievement for them.
Regularly ask team members for their ideas on how to improve things.
Praise
Consciously recognise the contribution team members have made that are examples of their own values and motivators (not just yours).
Use Empathy
It will be difficult to motivate someone if you can’t tune into their current or likely state of mind and level of motivation – motivation is a feeling. Read and/or watch The Power of Empathy to get good insight into how to do empathy correctly, and, what stops you!
How does motivation work in the brain?
Read Who is Driving the Bus? and watch Increasing Motivation for Work for a neuroscientist’s expert practical advice and explanation of how motivation actually works.
